Chapter 6

Lachlan

"Nevada Lacy. What the hell are we doing here?"

The fluorescent yellow sign of her Up With Yoga gym cut through the darkness of night in Somerville. She sat next to me in my truck, smelling good and looking sexy as hell in the forest-green dress I'd asked her to wear. She'd washed some of the brown out of her hair, hints of amber shining through again. Her skin glowed, that green shit she used worked like magic.

Another round of nerves zipped through my system. I'd gone out with Nev to parties and concerts, but tonight much more than fun balanced on the line. By the end of this date, I wanted her to understand how much I loved her, and I wanted her to accept she was mine. If I didn't succeed, I'd… No. Failure was not an option. Never surrender. My mantra.

If it didn't happen tonight, I'd regroup and try a different tactic tomorrow. If she made me wait, fine. But based on the kiss this morning and the fact she wore the dress, I had a feeling she wanted it as much as I did, and she'd been waiting for this as long as I had.

"I want to see you be imperfect. How does the infallible man handle a challenge?"

Infallible? Hardly. No one was bulletproof. But she'd picked a physical activity I could do in my sleep. "What makes you think I'll be challenged? Aerial stunts can't be too much harder than an obstacle course."

She laughed. "Oh, this is gonna be fun."

We walked inside Up With Yoga. Through the dim lights, all I saw was a big statue of Buddha on the counter, palm fronds painted on wooden walls, and her friend Crystal sitting in the reception area. Crystal was in her mid-30s, thick bangs that hung into her eyes and moved when she blinked. She smiled, popped up from her seat, and rushed to Nevada.

"Oh my god. I missed you so hard."

"I missed you too, Crystal."

"How's Shanti?"

"Lachlan's been taking good care of him."

Her chin dipped and she gave me some flirty eyes. "Hello, Lachlan. Looking hot tonight."

I was wearing gray slacks and a burgundy button down shirt, dress shoes, and a black leather belt. Nothing special, but I thought it looked respectable for our first date.

Crystal handed Nevada a set of keys. "Let's do lunch to catch up, but tonight, the gym is yours. Be careful in there."

As she left, she called back, "Rub his belly."

I held my hands up, looking at Nevada. "Rub his belly."

"She meant Buddha, you nerd."

She rubbed the statue's belly and I followed her into the gym, checking her ass as it swayed. Those heels made her legs look like they never ended.

One light in the center illuminated a long silk fabric hanging from the ceiling. The sparkly teal green stood out as the only color in the otherwise muted room. I'd seen Nevada do aerial yoga at home in a hammock attached to her door jamb, but this one hung from a fifty-foot ceiling.
